JKI Current News - June 25, 2008
(For Jikishin-Kai 2008 West Coast Gasshuku, please see Events Page)Shihan Long has informed us that Sasamori Takemi Soke, the 17th headmaster of Ono-Ha Itto-ryu, will be making an extremely rare visit outside of Japan to the USA!Sasamori Soke has never before taught in North America. In fact, he rarely teaches outside of the hombu dojo even in Japan.
6/25: VENUE UPDATE: This event will take place on August 8th & 9th at the Fleisher Athletic Center on the NJIT University campus in Newark, NJ. Registration information: Sakura Budokan Registration Page
In spite of the very short notice, there has been an incredible amount of interest within the Kendo, Iaido and Daito-ryu communities from those who would like to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
Sasamori Soke is highly regarded in Japan as one of the greatest modern-day teachers of Koryu kenjutsu. Sasamori Soke inherited the Ono-Ha Itto-ryu from his father, Sasamori Junzo, the 16th soke. Sasamori Junzo Soke was Menkyo Kaiden in Ono-Ha Itto-ryu, Chokugen-ryu Naginata jutsu, Shin Muso Hayshizaki-ryu and was the last known teacher of Muraku-ryu.
Ono-Ha Itto-ryu is a classical Japanese school of Kenjutsu (odachi, kodachi, habiki) and was founded by Ono Jirouemon Tadaaki whom inherited the shcool from Ito Ittosai Kagehisa (Itto-ryu). Ono Tadaaki was the kenjutsu instructor of the Tokugawa shogun.
If you are interested in attending a class with Sasamori Soke during his visit, please contact Shihan Carl Long as soon as possible.
